What will you be speaking about at CCW 2022? Why is that an important topic?
The contribution of secure telecommunication services to enable the energy transition, thus decarbonizing the energy system and achieving sustainability.
What are the key messages that you would like people to take away after attending your conference session?
The key messages are that secure and reliable telecommunication is key for integrating renewables into the energy system; in modern energy systems, the availability of the communication services used to control the power grid determines the availability of supply; and finally, effective cybersecurity measures are key in this field of application.
What do you see as being the big issues and challenges for the sector over the next five years?
The technological challenges are: storage of energy to provide for periods of no renewable energy generation
The economical challenges are: pricing; current cost of energy transition for households and industry will most probably rise; return will be in the long term
What will be the most transformative development in terms of the technology? What will that development mean for user operations, as well as the broader market?
Replacing traditional powerplants by renewables means also taking stability out of the energy system, and so the energy system becomes even more dependent upon the availability of telecommunication services. Also, solving the storage challenge for periods of no wind and no sun, “Dunkelflaute”, most probably with a hydrogen infrastructure. And lastly, huge investments are required at which durability and lifespan of renewables is still open.
What should be the number one priority for the sector going into the future?
To create and agree on a European view on energy transition.
What are you most looking forward to at CCW 2022 in Vienna? Are there any conference sessions in particular that have caught your attention?
CCW is a good place to share experiences, interconnect with peers and create new ideas and approaches in this important field.
Critical Communications World 2022 takes place between 21-23 June at the Messe Vienna, Austria
