Two London borough councils have partnered with remote monitoring specialists Aquasition to trial the use of sensors which they claim will help prevent flooding.
Sutton and Kingston Councils are deploying the sensors, which use Internet of Things (IoT) technology to monitor rising water levels, “helping to reduce the risk of disruption from road closures caused by surface water flooding”.
The move is part of the South London Partnership InnOvaTe Project, which aims to monitor flooding risks and water levels and help authorities mitigate the impact of floods in the region. The project has chosen Kingston for the first phase of the trial, following the area's recent issues with flooding.
Aquasition’s system uses IoT technology to trigger email early warning notifications, allowing both councils to monitor rising water levels and respond to any surface water flooding.
Speaking of the roll-out, Sutton councillor Manuel Abellan, said: “We are excited to be working with Aquasition to pilot this technology which aims to improve road safety for our residents and businesses in Sutton.
“The scheme will notify our teams in advance about any rising water levels which may occur, supporting them to take early intervention to stop any surface water flooding. We’re delighted that we have been able to make this happen and look forward to the impact this trial makes.”
