CCW 2022: Deploying a future-ready TETRA solution for Zurich Airport to cover all airport operations

Jens-Peter Neumann, Senior Project Manager, ErvoCom AG, presents this case study of Zurich airports' future-proof technology transformation

Zurich Airport is one of the most important hubs in Europe. It is the largest international airport in Switzerland and the principal hub of Swiss International Air Lines. It serves Zurich and, with its surface transport links, much of the rest of the country.

Historically Zurich Airport has used an old analogue trunked radio system and subsequently a Tetrapol system for radio coverage of flight handling, airlines and other users (companies) at the airport. They wanted to replace this with a new digital radio system and TETRA was deemed to be the best solution.

  • How to easily migrate from a Tetrapol-technology to a future-ready TETRA solution environment
  • Requirements of Zurich Airport for mission-critical communication
  • Benefits of using TETRA to meet the operational challenges and requirements of airport operators
  • Advantages of an open API, allowing easy integration to customized applications
  • Cost benefits and increased efficiency of a fully redundant TETRA solution
  • Future possibilities for expansion of the airport system (e.g. broadband integration).
